I needed a good place to mount my Hi-Lift jack. I don't have really any good place to mount it outside my 4Runner, so I have always just laid it in the back along side the wheel well and used tie-down straps to hold it in place.
The problem with this was that this is also where I sleep (when camping!), so I was always taking it out and putting it back in. Another problem was that the handle was always squeaking and rattling on dirt roads. Squeaks and rattles annoy me like nothing else.
So, I did what many other people do and mounted the jack to my roll bar using one of the the bolt holes put in by the factory for rear shoulder belts (which my 4Runner did not come with). The bolt size is not metric. It is 7/16 NF threads.
In order to save room, I removed the base from the jack and bolted it near the top of the jack. Also, in order to prevent the handle from rattling and squeaking, I drilled a hole through it and through the base and bolted it securely to the base.
Here is another view showing the backside.
At first I tried using a bungee cord to secure the bottom of the jack to the rear of the roll bar. However, I discovered this was not secure enough and the jack could bounce up and down. Plus, it looked cheesy.
After a little thought, I went to AutoZone and got a 2 1/8 muffler u-bolt. This fit perfectly around the roll bar and through the holes in the jack handle. (Note: I am going to cut off the excess u-bolt threads showing in the picture.)
This setup is perfect. The jack is mounted rock-solid to the roll bar. The handle is bolted rock-solid to the jack (it actually bends around the roll bar a little bit, putting it under tension which further secures it). There is absolutely no movement, squeaks, or rattles; and I dont have to remove it every time I want to go to sleep. Plus it is down low and pretty much out of sight.
This is the 48 jack. I believe that it will fit if the rear seat is up. I can't say for sure, however, because I removed the left rear seat altogether some time ago to allow more sleeping room and to create a storage compartment.
If you have the 60 jack, you can do something similar using the top seatbelt hole instead of the bottom one.
